The Immersive Alarm is the first fantasy project in Multichoice Talent Factory's history, bringing a fresh, imaginative experience to the screen. We recently caught up with the producer, Sihnemariam Abebe and this is what she shared with us:

Please tell us a bit more about yourself.
My name is Sihnemariam Abebe, and I am a Creative BSc graduate in Performing Visual Arts from Addis Ababa University, with a strong foundation in storytelling and visual production. I recently completed my training in film production at the prestigious MultiChoice Talent Factory (Class of 2024), where I specialized in producing and minored in assistant directing. Additionally, I am currently pursuing a master's degree in marketing management to further strengthen my professional capabilities. After returning to my hometown, I had the opportunity to be a part of DSTV Ethiopia for Abol TV's “Second family” adaptation project. As a producer, my goal is to become a leading creative talent in the entertainment industry, contributing to innovative projects that resonate both locally and globally. I am proficient in production coordination, budgeting, scheduling, and team management, driven by my passion for the arts. I am dedicated to delivering top-tier productions and excited to refine my producing skills further.

How did you get involved with MTF?
I discovered the MTF opportunity through my former boss at a production company. He recommended and insisted that I apply, recognizing the potential for me to grow within the program.

Take us through the process of creating the movie –from the idea to the finished product.
The process of creating The Immersive Alarm involved a multi-stage effort that required close collaboration and attention to detail:

  • Pre-production: This phase was essential, as it laid the groundwork for everything that followed. We worked hard on refining the script, ensuring that each scene had the right emotional depth. The casting process was thorough, as we carefully selected actors who could bring the characters to life. Our team spent time building a strong connection, making sure everyone shared the same vision. Locations were scouted and secured, wardrobe and props were thoughtfully planned, and rehearsals helped both the cast and crew get on the same page with the director's vision.

  • Production: During the shooting phase, we stuck to the schedule as closely as possible. The departments worked closely together to maintain consistency throughout the shoot. Of course, we faced challenges like weather disruptions and some technical issues, but we adapted quickly to keep things moving smoothly. Despite the pressure, the cast and crew kept their spirits high, and there was a real sense of creative energy flowing on set, all while making sure we stayed true to the director’s vision.

  • Post-production: This is where everything came together. The editor collaborated closely with the director to shape the story into something compelling. The sound design, colour grading, and visual effects added the finishing touches that brought the film to life. We paid close attention to the smallest details, from the music score to the final post-production documentation, to ensure the film was ready for its audience.

What are some of the biggest challenges you faced during the production process?
Challenges faced during The Immersive Alarm production included:

  • Pre-production: We faced tight schedules and challenges with locking locations, both in the short and long term. Securing locations took more time than expected, which impacted other preparations. Additionally, coordinating the cast for enough rehearsal time was tricky, but we worked hard to make sure everyone was ready and aligned with the director’s vision.

  • Production: The shoot came with weather disruptions and unexpected technical issues. We also had some last-minute cast unavailability, which added to the stress. There were a few challenges with maintaining continuity during long days and nights of shooting, as some miscommunications arose between the crew. However, we resolved these issues through open discussions and critical problem-solving strategies that kept things on track.

  • Post-production: Time constraints were a significant challenge, especially with the creative demands of the fantasy genre, which required more time than we had. Some logistical errors added pressure, but we learned a great deal about managing post-production workflows. We realized that staying organized and taking responsibility for each task helped us maintain time efficiency. Having enough time for feedback and maintaining a comfortable work pace was key to ensuring that everything was completed on schedule and to the highest standard.

Solutions involved flexible scheduling, reallocation of resources, and clear communication with the team to maintain efficiency. Additionally, I was able to discuss and extend post-production deadlines with the academy, ensuring everything was completed to the highest standard.

Can you share any memorable experiences or stories while doing the project?
One of my most memorable experiences was the final day of shooting. We had a lot of unit moves, but despite the exhaustion, the crew and cast kept their spirits high. The strong relationships we had built throughout the project helped us get everything done on time. The support from the Nderi people was heartwarming, and it truly felt like a family effort. Everyone was tired, but we pulled together and delivered a fantastic result.

How do you navigate the competitive nature of the film industry?
I stay focused on continuous learning and adapting to industry trends. By collaborating with talented individuals and staying true to my vision, I ensure that my work stands out. The competition is tough, but by building genuine relationships, improving my craft, and staying committed, I can successfully navigate through it.

What are some key qualities you look out for in actors and production teams?
In actors and production teams, I look for dedication, professionalism, and a passion for their craft. I believe in teamwork, so it’s important to have individuals who are not only skilled but also collaborative and positive. A good attitude and the ability to adapt are essential in overcoming the challenges that inevitably arise in film production.

Can you share any advice for aspiring film producers looking to break into the industry?
My advice would be to focus on learning as much as you can from every project, no matter how small. Build strong relationships, be adaptable, and always stay committed to your vision. The road to success isn’t easy, but with passion and perseverance, you can carve out your path. Stay open to feedback and be willing to continuously evolve your skills.
